Holiday in San Candido: Sights, events & more

Cultural diversity

What colourful stories the walls of San Candido would have to tell, if you gave them a voice? They would be fairytale stories about days gone by, of whose splendour today still numerous cultural sights tell around the historic market town. Tradition, culture and customs are values that have always been close to the hearts of the people here in the Dolomites. A varied program of events all year round makes the enthusiasm for this also accessible to holiday guests.

Our residence is located in the immediate vicinity of the collegiate church, which can already be admired when looking out of the window of Residence Kugler. People say it’s probably the most important sacred building in the Romanesque style in the entire Eastern Alps. With its symbolic crypt, the well-known crucifixion group and the Romanesque cupola fresco, the so-called “God’s Castle” and the adjacent monastery museum are among the most beautiful sights in San Candido and the surrounding area.

(1 minute walk)

Just a few steps further, the Michaelskirche is enthroned with its impressive interior, decorated with vault frescoes. It was still a Romanesque church in the 12th century, although at the beginning of the 18th century it was transformed into a baroque masterpiece.

Außerkirchl

(5 minute walk)

The Altöttinger and Grabeskirche, popularly known as the “Ausserkirchl”, was built in the 17th century by Georg Paprion from San Candido. After his pilgrimage to the Holy Land, he attempted to reconstruct the Grabeskirche over the Holy Sepulchre. The works of the picturesque baroque church are among the most important of South Tyrolean folk art.

Wildbad San Candido

(35 minute walk)

Five healing springs, a chapel and a grand hotel, which was originally built as a sanatorium in the 16th century and was later rebuilt. Wealthy citizens of the upper classes once rubbed shoulders here until the historic building was closed and auctioned off. Since then, the Wildbad ruins just look from afar at the beautiful meadows nearby however, they are used as a small local recreation area in a fairytale ambience.
